Our Story

This property began as a goat farm for Scapegoats, a business founded by Heather Lombard in 2015. Scapegoats rents goats to clear invasive plants from residential and commercial properties, land trusts, city parks, and more. The business is still actively operated from this land today.

In 2025, Heather felt a pull towards something new. What started as daydreams about rescuing hard-to-home or “misfit” animals quickly became a calling. After applying for 501(c)3 status, the sanctuary officially opened the day after Christmas in 2025.

That same day, two pigs were rescued from the ASPCA in Stratham, NH. Shortly after launching on social media, a small fundraiser invited the public to help name them, resulting in Butch and Cassidy. Along with a rescued feral barn cat named Scrooge, they became the founding residents of Mousam Misfits Sanctuary.

Looking ahead, the sanctuary will continue to grow as Scapegoats naturally winds down, with plans to eventually retire the goat-rental business and focus fully on sanctuary work. At capacity, Mousam Misfits will provide lifelong care for approximately 20-25 animals. A new section is planned for the summer of 2026, dedicated specifically to disabled and hospice animals.

This is an endeavor rooted in love, learning, and intention, and we are grateful to welcome anyone who wants to follow along as we grow.

Every decision we make is shaped by a clear sense of purpose. Our journey has been anything but ordinary. Through every step, we've focused on staying true to our values and making space for thoughtful, lasting work.

Our Mission

Mousam Misfits Sanctuary is a safe, loving home for small farm animals in need. Nestled along the Mousam River in Southern Maine, we provide sanctuary to goats, sheep, pigs, ducks, and other misfit creatures, ensuring they receive the care, respect, and compassion they deserve.

Our mission is to create a peaceful refuge where these animals can live out their lives free from harm, while also fostering a deeper appreciation for their worth within our community.

What is a misfit?

A misfit animal is one who reminds us that being different doesn’t mean being unwanted. It means you belong somewhere really special, and at Mousam Misfits, you fit in perfectly.
